5 tips to celebrate an eco friendly Ramadan

Updated: May 15, 2023

Holy month of Ramadan is all about giving, self reflection, kindness and devotion around the world. During this month, Muslims abstain from food, drink, and other physical needs during the daylight hours as a way to purify the soul and come closer to Allah. However, it is also an opportunity to reflect on our impact on the environment and take steps to reduce our carbon footprint and be more mindful.

Here are 5 top tips on how to celebrate an eco-friendly Ramadan:

Tip #1 - Reduce food waste:

Ramadan is a time when people often prepare elaborate meals for iftar (the meal that breaks the fast) and suhoor (the meal before the fast begins). However, this can lead to a lot of food waste. To reduce food waste, plan your meals carefully and only prepare what you need. If you have leftovers, consider donating them to a local charity.

Tip #2 - Use reusable containers, utensils:

Instead of using disposable containers and utensils, use reusable containers to store and transport food. This will help reduce plastic waste and also save you money in the long run.

Tip #5 - Use electricity wisely:

During Ramadan people often lose their natural sleeping patterns. And this is something to be mindful of when it comes to the environment. We end up using a lot electricity mindlessly. Imagine wasting so much of electricity scrolling through channels on the television. We could be a little mindful and switch off the electric devices when you can swap them with talking and spending time with family and friends.
